Verdelhos

The parish of Verdelhos is made up of the places of Barreiros, Cova, Sarnadas and Verdelhos. It is located about 15kms from the county seat, at its northern end, between the hills of the Beijames river valley (whose source is 9 km west).

Economically, activities inherent to the primary sector stand out. The cultivation of maize, potatoes and beans reign supreme. The creation of bovine and caprine species is also predominant, with some industrial activity (carpentry and metalwork).

Toponymically, Verdelhos finds its origin in the green color, perhaps derived from the fact that woods and forests abound in its surroundings at the time of its foundation (speculated in the Luso-Roman period, due to architectural remains belonging to a castro having been found in the parish).

Patrimony

The parish church, dedicated to São Pedro, is the greatest heritage asset of the parish of Verdelhos, it is not known when it was built, since the oldest document dates only from 1804.

The chapel of São Romão is located two kilometers from the village, having been built in order to serve as a barrier to the passage of dogs to the parish headquarters, since at that time a terrible plague was raging. Also a reference to the chapel of Santo António, built next to the cemetery and dating from 1760. The bridge over the river Beijames is very old.

Cultural and Built Heritage: Main Church, Santo António chapel, São Romão chapel, Duas Bicas fountain, bridge over the Beijames river, Outeiro fountain and water mills.

Other places of tourist interest: Landscaped places and banks of the river Beijames.
