Ferro

Located in the southwest of the municipality and close to the left bank of the river Zêzere, the parish of Ferro is located about eleven kilometers from Covilhã. It is made up of the places of Freixo, Lameiras, Madeira, Monte Serrano, Penedia, Rasas, Ribeiro do Moinho, Semaria, Sítio do Marujo, Sítio da Póvoa, Sítio do Ribeiro de Linhares and Souto Alto.

Ferro is limited to the north by part of the parish of Caria, separated from Ferro by the stream of the same name, and also by the river Zêzere, which serves as a natural boundary between this parish and Boidobra. To the south it borders on the lands of Peroviseu, to the east it is limited by the parishes of Peraboa and Peroviseu, to the west it borders on the parishes of Tortosendo and Alcaria.

The settlement of this parish dates back to Roman times, as it was this people who gave the town its name, through the Latin word Ferrum. It is known how the Romans, in the lands they conquered, took advantage of the mineral resources of the subsoil, and the wealth of this region in this matter is also known.

In terms of heritage, an initial reference for the Igreja Matriz, with Baroque characteristics, built in the 18th century, with highlights inside the altars in gilded carving and the altarpiece of the Tabernacle. The existing altars are dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição and Nossa Senhora do Rosário.

As for the chapel of Espírito Santo, it retains most of its original elements, having been built in the 16th century and having belonged to the Order of Santiago.

The chapel of the Sacred Heart of Mary, from the 19th century, is located on the outskirts of the village, with a simple architecture that makes it more beautiful.

Thus, it will not be surprising that the toponym has exactly to do with this reality of the parish.
