S. Jorge da Beira

São Jorge da Beira, a parish located in the extreme southwest of the municipality, is the farthest village from its headquarters, about thirty-nine kilometers, it comprises the places of Panasqueira, Cambões, Vale da Cerdeira and Casal de Santa Teresinha. The parish extends over an area of approximately twenty-five square kilometers.

The parish of São Jorge da Beira (formerly called Cebola) spreads out on the slopes of the Picoto de Cebola mountain range. We do not know the origins of São Jorge da Beira. However, it is thought to be an ancient settlement. A land of shepherds, coal workers, blacksmiths. It would have served as a second-class commercial warehouse for the trade routes that passed through Serra de Cebola (Rota da Lã, Rota do Sal, Carvão…).

Until the 27th of April 1887, São Jorge da Beira belonged, as a simple place, to the parish of Casegas. Its residents, on that date, asked for the detachment and constitution of an independent parish. This happened, “since the parish of Cebola has more than the number of inhabitants required by law for the renewal of parish offices”. Cebola, because that was the name of the parish at the time.

On October 21, 1960, it was then renamed São Jorge da Beira.
