Dominguiso

Eleven kilometers from the county seat, the parish of Dominguiso is located on the slopes of Serra da Estrela, close to the right bank of the river Zêzere.

The curious name of the parish is due, according to Alexandre Carvalho Costa in “Legends, Historietas, Popular Etymologies and other etymologies concerning Cities, Towns, Villages and places of mainland Portugal”, to an individual who lived here in ancient times and which was called Dominiguiz or Dominguiz, which would degenerate into Dominguiso.

Another tradition points to dairy as having been the basis of the name. Here lived the “lord of cheeses”, responsible for its quality, which in Latin means “dominus quejum”.

In administrative terms, Dominguiso belonged to Tortosendo until the 2nd of November 1926, having since then constituted an independent parish.
