COVILHÃ IS CREATIVE CITY OF THE UNESCO NETWORK
THE FIRST IN PORTUGAL IN THE AREA OF DESIGN
Covilhã is, since November 8, 2021, one of the world cities with the official designation of Creative City, in recognition of its commitment to placing Culture and Creativity at the center of sustainable urban development, sharing knowledge and good practices internationally.
Design, allied to Culture, Creativity and Sustainable Development, thus becomes one of the main drivers of public policies in the Municipality of Covilhã, which assumes this long-term project, the most comprehensive and priority strategy of the 2021-2024 mandate.
After a successful application submission and formal support from the UNESCO National Committee, Covilhã officially joins the UNESCO International Network of Creative Cities (UCCN) since 2021, in the creative field of Design, in which it is the first in Portugal. In this area, there were only three cities that, worldwide, saw their designation confirmed this year: Covilhã (Portugal), Doha (Qatar), Whanganui (New Zealand).
In addition to Covilhã, Santa Maria da Feira was the other Portuguese city to join this International Network, created in 2014, which now has 295 cities and covers 90 countries that invest specifically in areas such as Crafts and Popular Art, Design, Cinema, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music.
