Union of Parishes of Cantar Galo and Vila do Carvalho

Cantar Galo

It is one of the most recent parishes in the municipality of Covilhã, having been created only on August 29, 1989, when it was separated from the parishes of Aldeia do Carvalho and Conceição da Covilhã.

Its territory is now formed by the neighborhoods of S. Vicente, Lameirões, Pousadinha, Alagoeiros and part of S. Domingos.

The name, rather curious, is due to a very old stream that exists here, and which is exactly called Cantar-Galo.

Vila do Carvalho

Following a road called “varandim mágico”, from where you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view, we find the old village of Carvalho, on the right bank of the stream of the same name.

Initially called Aldeia do Carvalho, it was elevated to the category of village on August 24, 1989.

On the etymological origin of the name of the parish there are two versions. One, considers that the name comes from the proliferation in the current parish of several oaks; another, clarifies that in the place where the oaks would have existed in abundance, a remarkable oak would have stood out in relation to the others, giving the name to the primitive village.
