Vale da Candeeira

PNSE - Serra da Estrela

The Candeeira Glacier valley is probably the most untouched large space in our Serra da Estrela.

Candeeira is a suspended valley, of glacier origin, over the Zêzere Glacier Valley. In the place where the two glacial languages met, the morenic accumulation Espinhaço do Cão was formed.
This valley located at a height of about 1450 meters, runs perpendicular to the Zêzere Valley. It is a very humid region when it is not covered with snow due to the waters from the melting of the upper plateau, where Ribeira da Candeeira flows. There we can find several shrub species such as cervum and dwarf juniper.
During winter, due to snowfall, Ribeira da Candeeira has a higher flow. It launches down the slope, meeting the Zêzere creating several waterfalls on the slope of the valley, providing a scenario of rare beauty.

An area of choice for highland pastures, there are no roads or other buildings from here. Accessible only on foot and by mountain trails.

Nature, hiking and photography lovers cannot miss this valley.
