Borralheira – Alvares Bridge Rest Area

Borralheira is located in the parish of Teixoso, whose settlement dates back to Roman times, confirmed by some archaeological remains found in the Terlamonte area. The origin of its name comes from the fact that, in the locality, there were abundant yew trees , leafy, low, medium-sized trees that, meanwhile, have disappeared. The bridge over the River Zêzere was built in the 17th century by David Álvares, and has Roman features.

Industry, agriculture, livestock, tapestry and embroidery handicrafts, commerce and services are some of the main activities to which the active population is engaged. In addition to being a very popular sport fishing spot , here you will also find a picnic area used by the local population to escape the summer heat. The gastronomy is quite rich and diverse . The broth from the oven, the pan in the oven, the kid roast in the mountains, the cherovias, the porridge of carolo and the rice pudding are the delight of visitors and tourists. The village has a vast cultural heritage built, of which it is worth mentioning the Mother Church and the Chapel of Santo Cristo, the latter classified as a property of national interest.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE

Keeping on the right bank of the river, GRZ approaches the railway line that it follows in the distance, to cross it shortly afterwards and head south through forest roads with a wide view over Cova da Beira. After crossing the access to the motorway through an underpass, the route again reaches a tar road that takes you to the Alvares bridge.
