Barco Rest Area – Cabeço do Pião

Type: Linear Pedestrian; Distance: 13,9 Km

Average Duration: 3h25m (pedestrian) 1h15 (MTB)

Agriculture is one of the main activities of the population of Barco. The parish land is fertile and essentially produces maize, beans, olive oil and rye. Almost all cultivated land is located on the banks of the Zêzere, bordered by walls perpendicular to the river that characterize the landscape. They have a very specific and well-structured function: it is with these walls that they are supported and fix the fertile soils brought by the river floods.

The village of Barco is a parish in the municipality of Covilhã, with 14.07 km² of area and about 500 inhabitants. Given the cohesion and participation of the people of Barco in the sociocultural activities of the village, there are several associations, of which ARPAZ – Regional Solidarity and Progress Association of Alto Zêzere, Sport Clube do Barco, Sociedade de Recreio e Folclore de S. Sebastião, the Clube de Caça e Pesca on the Zêzere River, the Cultural and Recreational Association of Barco, the Folkloric Ranch and the Social Center.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE

Leaving this place, the route approaches the Zêzere river to follow the margin along the agricultural fields that border it. Beginning on roads with some accessibility, you will then follow ancient paths, keeping a short distance from the river. Leaving these paths, you pass by Ourondo to continue along the river, now on dirt paths, now on the EM512 that takes you to the Cabeço do Pião bridge.
